Police Chief and Activists Meet to Talk About Police Shooting

Four officers are on administrative leave
Monday, February 8, 2010

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The head of the Justice Resource Center says he has many concerns about this weekend's police shooting death of 48-year old Donnie Miles. The Reverend James Tennyson and others met with Louisville Metro Police Chief Robert White today to talk about those concerns.

White says sometimes force is the only answer. He says there will be a complete investigation, but he says when officers fear for their lives or the lives of others, they can use the force necessary to stop that threat.

Several shots were fired at Miles after police say he came after officers with a hammer in hand outside of the Iroquois Homes apartment complex Saturday night. He also apparently verbally threatened at least one officer.

One officer used his taser twice on Miles, but that did not stop him. There was also an attempt to fire tear gas, but it did not deploy. The four officers who fired shots are on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
